The Q&A Archives: starting indoor vegetables

Question: Is it too late in the season to start seeds indoors for vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers? I live in Illinois..

Answer: Your average last frost date is April 24 so if you wait a couple of weeks you can sow your seeds directly in the garden. But, if you really want to sow them indoors now, you can. When the seeds germinate they will need 14-16 hours of light each day. I use hooded shoplights with 2 fluorescent tubes, hung about 2 inches above the tops of the plants and move the lights up as the plants grow, always keeping the light source 2 inches above the foliage. Enjoy your garden!
