| I started tomato plants from seeds and now I am wondering when is a good date to plant them outside. I know you can't predict mother nature but what is a 'suggested date' to safely plant them outside. I also have squash, beans, peas, peppers, and cucumbers. |
| Your average last frost date in Richmond is April 24 (the first frost of the season is typically 10/13). Based upon the historical average, I'd say it is safe to plant your seedlings outdoors. You will want to harden them off for a few days before planting them out. Begin by taking them outside and putting them in a shady spot and then bringing them back indoors overnight. The next day take them out and give them a few hours of morning sun and shade the rest of the day taking them in at night. The third day give them full morning sun but afternoon shade. Leave them out overnight. The next day give them full morning sun and an hour or two of afternoon sun. By the end of a week they should be sitting outside all day in full sunshine and spending all night outdoors. They should be sufficiently hardened off to go into the garden.
