The Q&A Archives: pruning azealas

Question: Since my azealas are finished blooming when is it best to prune and how much should I cut back? Thanks

Answer: Azaleas spend all summer developing flower buds for next spring's floral display so you will want to prune them immediately after flowering has finished this spring. You can lightly trim, or take up to one third of the plant when you prune. Either way, the azaleas will spend the summer growing new stems and leaves and flower buds, too. Best wishes with your azaleas!
