I have a perennial garden that is mostly hosta varieties, there are a lot of weeds that look similar to a dandelion but are covered in thorns (small but painful!) when I try to pull them out they have a long taproot similar to dandelions so I am going to have to resort to a herbicide - can you recommend one that won't harm my hostas in close proximity?

About the only thing safe for your hostas is to spot treat those nasty weeds with a spray of Round Up. It will kill anything it touches so you may need to set a cardboard box over each of your hostas while spraying the weed killer. Round Up stays in the weed and travels down to kill the roots but does not move in the soil so your hostas will be safe - as long as you keep the spray and the drift off of them. Best wishes with your project!
