my evergreen is overgrown and coming in walkway how to prune so it did not die

Pruning depends on the type of evergreen. With some, you can only snap off the candles as they grow in the spring. With others you can safely trim a few inches off. Evergreens rarely develop new foliage if they are pruned back to bare wood so it's better to prune frequently than to wait until something is overgrown enough that you need to prune it back to bare wood.
