| Sandy soil can be improved with the addition of organic matter. If you rent a core aerator, which removes one inch by 3 inch long plugs from the lawn, you can leave the plugs on the lawn to dissolve in rain water or water from the sprinklers. After aerating, spread a half inch of compost over the entire lawn. The compost will work its way down into the holes left by the plugs and help improve the soil beneath your lawn.
