Is this the time to dethatch a lawn? We have so much thatch and it is getting worse each year. We live in zip code 15017. Thank you!

Thatching removes the dead stolons, rhizomes, stems and old grass blades. All turfgrasses have thatch but a thatch layer that is too thick can keep water from penetrating down to the roots and can keep fertilizers from reaching the soil. If your turf has excessive thatch, more than one inch of thatch, then you should dethatch your lawn, then overseed this spring. If you don't want to overseed until fall, wait and dethatch in the fall and then overseed. The choice is yours. Best wishes with your lawn!
