| I'm doing a container garden this year due to lack of ground space. I've bought two blueberry plants and have yet to transplant them b/c I've heard they need an acidic environment. Can I use regular potting soil and add food for azaleas or do I need special soil? If so, where do I buy such soil? Thanks! Oh, and what's the best size container for them? |
| I would put the plants in 5-gallon containers. You can purchase nursery pots that size or you can use recycled or new 5 gallon buckets if you drill holes in the bottom for drainage. Be sure to set the buckets up on rocks or pieces of 2x4 to assure good drainage through the bottom holes. Fill with regular potting soil to which you have added peat moss. I'd use 2/3 potting soil to 1/3 peat moss by volume. After planting your blueberry bushes you can feed them with an acidified fertilizer. I would use Miracid or Miracle Gro in the liquid formulation, then dilute and apply at half strength so as not to burn the roots of your containerized plants. Good luck with your blueberries! |
