I misunderstood in a book about pruning. It said to prune hard, well I cut back to within a foot of the ground. Have I killed my Crape Myrtle?

I don't think you killed your crape myrtle - only time will tell - but it may not bloom for you for a while! If the plant has been in the ground for a few years and the root system is well established, your crape myrtle should recover. If it's a relatively new plant, it may sulk for a while before it begins to regrow. Let's hope for the best!
