Garden soil is mostly minerals (soil) and compost is decomposed organic matter. If you purchase garden soil in bulk rather than in plastic bags you can order a three way mix which is a misture of garden soil, sand and compost. It will drain quickly, hold just the right amount of moisture and be ready for planting. If you purchase garden soil you will want to add some compost to enrich it and help it drain well without clumping together. Hope this answers your question!
