| I have periwinkle (Vinca minor) growing in many parts of my yard. It's beautiful cover, but I'm having a problem with grass growing up thru. Short of digging up all my groundcover, do you have any recommendations for getting rid of the grass? |
| Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is one of my favorite groundcovers. If your vinca is newly planted and has not yet spread and filled in the area, you have several options. One is to hand pull or selectively dig out the grass, another is to trim it short and immediately smother it with newspaper topped with an organic mulch such as bark, and another is to kill it out with an herbicide that affects only grasses. You might also wish to add additional vinca starter plants if it is very thin in some spots. Ultimately the vinca will fill in and out-compete the grass. One way to help the vinca fill in faster is to be sure it has adequate soil moisture and fertility during the coming growing season. |
