The Q&A Archives: Hibiscus in Missouri

Question: I have recently purchased a new home which had 4 hibiscus trees in full bloom last fall when I bought the house. Now they look dead and I haven't cut them back at all. Are hibiscus trees hardy in Columbia, Missouri? Should I cut the dead parts off and hope for the best or just pull the whole thing out. Help Please!

Answer: Hardy hibiscus, called Rose of Sharon, will winter over in your gardening region. these plants develop flowers on new growth so you can prune yours back a bit this spring and they will grow lots of new stems and flowers later in the season.
