| I'm getting ready to install my first paver brick patio. My research indicates a need for a 4 inch sub base of crushed rock. However, I have had several people tell me that because of the excellent drainage in my area of eastern Maryland I should not use the base, lay a weedguard down and then my sand. What do I do? |
| I disagree with the people you've talked with. A sub base, properly compacted, will keep the pavers from shifting and settling which will make them look horribly uneven. Even though your soil drains well, you do get frost heave, which will make the pavers shift. To install properly, you need to excavate 5" plus the depth of the paver (4" base + 1" leveling sand). |
