Dahlias like a rich soil and, to maintain growth and flowering, plenty of moisture. A large, tall dahlia would require a fairly large pot such as a whiskey barrel planter, a dwarf type should do well in a 12 inch pot. The pot needs to be wide enough to plant the tuber fairly deep and in a horizontal position, and the larger the pot the easier it will be for you to maintain a consistant moisture level.
