| I like to plant onion sets all year around as to have a supply of small tender green onions. I find that the sets get soft and dead after about three months. Will freezing them in an air tight container keep them alive? Any suggestions? |
| It would be nice to have a year 'round supply of scallions, but freezing the onion sets will render them dead and mushy. Since the onions have a natural lifecycle of growing and resting, you should help them maintain their resting period by storing them in a cool, dark place that's about 40F degrees. The onion sets you're keeping are obviously trying to sprout in storage. Without moisture and sunshine, they can't grow, so they begin to decompose. You might try growing your scallions from seed, rather than from sets. That way you can sow every two weeks and have little green onions available during the growing season. |
