The Q&A Archives: Lawn for Shady Area

Question: Good morning, I had a plumbing problem so i had to dig up part of my front lawn the area is a shaded area and the grass will not grow back what can i do to make the grass come back and catch up with the rest of the yard.

Answer: Unless you have at least 1/2 day of sun, grasses simply won't thrive. You will need to reseed every year or two. You might have better luck with sod because it is already rooted and established, but I still think you will need to overseed every few years. Or, you might want to grow groundcovers and use mulch instead. Try groundcovers such as wild ginger, goutweed, ivy or pachysandra and mulch heavily traveled areas with bark mulch. This will keep things looking nice and green - and you won't have to mow! Enjoy your landscape.
