| I just bought a papaya tree and was wanting some tips on planting it. I know it should go in direct sun and a well-drained area but I was checking the internet and saw something about having a male and female tree in order to bear fruit. Is that so? Do I have to have two and how do I tell what kind of tree I have? |
| I think I'd wait to see what your plant does before purchasing another one to act as a companion. You can tell the gender of your plant when it flowers. The five-petalled flowers are fleshy, waxy and slightly fragrant. Some plants bear only short-stalked female flowers, or bisexual (perfect) flowers also on short stalks, while others may bear only male flowers, clustered on panicles 5 or 6 feet long. Some plants may have both male and female flowers. Others at certain seasons produce short-stalked male flowers, at other times perfect flowers. I'd watch to see how it flowers and whether or not it produces fruit before getting a second papaya tree. Full sunshine, well draining soils and your papaya should thrive in your garden. Enjoy! |
