| Hello, Im new to gardening. I live in Santa Monica, CA and bought a Mexican Key Lime tree yesterday! Very excited, but I dont have room to plant it in the ground, so Im keeping it potted. Any advise to a healthy, long life for this guy? I dont want it to go into shock, so I left it in its pot from home depot (a 5 gallon plastic pot), but fed it organic Citrus fertalizer. Whats next? | Your lime tree will grow quite happily in a container. Find a 7-gallon container with lots of drainage holes in the bottom and use moistened potting soil to fill in and around the roots of your tree. Be sure that it is at the same soil level as it was growing in the nursery container when you have finished planting it. Next is to water it thoroughly to settle the soil and drive out any air pockets. Then place your tree in a sunny spot. Care of lime trees is pretty straight forward after you know how to plant a lime tree. Some lime tree tips include: Water consistently - Lime trees will drop their leaves if left dry for too long. This being said, too much watering will kill them as well. Best care of lime trees mean that you water consistently but not obsessively. Fertilize Frequently - Lime trees are heavy feeders. They will quickly deplete the soil around them, in the ground or in a container. Be sure to fertilize every few months with compost or other organic citrus fertilizer (in amounts as recommended on the label). Keep them warm - Lime trees can not tolerate temperatures much under 50F. Keep them in a place where it does not get colder than 50F. Best wishes with your new lime tree! |
