The Q&A Archives: Pruning Butterfly bush

Question: I live in Redding 9 I think. Is it too late to prune my butterfly bush? And also can I keep this in container? My soil is very poor.

Answer: You can prune your butterfly bush now and it will have plenty of time to grow and flower for you. You can keep it in a container for a year or so but the root system would be much happier in the ground - even in poor soil. Or, you can dig a large area, amend it with organic matter and then plant your butterfly bush. It grows in poor soils without much problem and the addition of organic matter will get it off to a good start. Best wishes with your butterfly bush!
