| If you purchased the plant inside, it is tropical and will make a great houseplant or a plant for shade in an area that remains above freezing during the winter time. If the leaves are long and narrow, I suspect it is a dracaena. If you can post your picture on a website such as Flickr or Picasa or and send us the web address we can check it out and identify it for you.
