| I recently moved near a forest preserve. I have noticed racoons in the neighborhood on several occasions in the morning. I am starting your run of the mill vegetable garden tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers,etc. Do I have to worrying about the racoons eating my vegetables? Is there a way to protect them other than building a fence? |
| Raccoons are little devils in the garden, are you planning on corn? Raccoons will devastate corn. I've never heard of raccoons going after the other veggies you mention though. Just in case, you can try lots of home remedies such as playing a radio all night in the veggie patch, spraying hot pepper spray on the plants, sprinkle human hair in the garden, sprinkle talcum powder around the garden, lay down some chicken wire (presumably they don't like to walk on it), or buy an animal repellent such as fox urine, coyote urine, or "Get Away" (all are offered by Burpee at ph. 1-800-888-1447). All may work for awhile, a long time, or not at all. Like I said, raccoons usually only go for the corn, so if you are planning on that, the best bet is a good dog or an electric fence. They can climb regular fences easily. |
