My home is in upstate NY on a hill with little shade. The summer afternoon sun can be brutal on my flowers. Can you suggest some hardy annuals and perennials that can take the heat and sun?

A huge collection of plants will thrive in the area you describe! Try Coreopsis, Dianthus, Gaillardia, Liatris, Ice Plant, Evening primrose, Watsonia, Zinnia, Sedums, Poppies, Mexican sunflower, or Daisies. Each of these plants will produce brightly colored flowers in the summertime.
