Answer: Unless you have at least 1/2 day of sun in your backyard, turfgrass won't grow - or at least won't thrive. One of the most shade tolerant grasses are the fescues, but it may not grow well in Texas. I would try groundcovers such as wild ginger, goutweed, ivy or pachysandra instead of turf in the shady area. Check local nurseries for the groundcovers mentioned as well as others that grow well in your region. Good luck with your yard!
