The Q&A Archives: Container Tomato Varieties for South FL

Question: I live in south Florida and have always grown tomatoes in a garden setting. What type of tomato do you recommend for growing on a screen patio with a due south exposure. Is it true that tomatoes must have insects to pollenate their fruit? Thanks. Neil Sacks Coral Springs, FL

Answer: You can grow many dwarf tomato varieties in tubs in a screened patio with a south facing exposure as long as the plants get at least 1/2 sun a day. Some varieties to try are 'Bush Big Boy', 'Tumbler', 'Pixie II', and any of the Husky series (Husky Red, Gold, Cherry).
