What is the best method to remove turf that has lots of tree roots beneath it? Considering ground cover in place of that area of lawn.

I think the only way to remove it is to dig it out. You may be able to work a flat shovel beneath the roots of the turf and roll it up like sod, or you may simply have to dig it out piece by piece. Wish there were an easier way but vegetation killers can harm the tree roots and you wouldn't want to compromise the health of your tree. Good luck with your project!
