During one of the last snowfalls, the long bottom limb of a silver maple snapped in two. Do I need to trim or treat the splintered limb about eight feet from the trunk?

I would remove the limb. There's really no way to repair a splintered limb and leaving it there might cause a hazard if it breaks off and falls. I would take it down. Best wishes with your garden!
