i planted strawberries this year. The berries will grow to be about nickle size, start to turn red, then wilt, and die.. Could this be a soil problem?

It does sound like root stress to me. I would mulch the soil and water deeply once or twice a week. The mulch will help the soil maintain moisture. If the berries don't improve over the summer, plan on digging and resetting the crowns this winter. Amend the soil with organic matter and replant the plants, making sure the crowns are just at or slightly above the soil level. This should help next year's crops. Enjoy!
