I want to replace a tree in the backyard of my townhouse. What suggestions do you have for a 10'x 30' area that doesn't have shallow roots?

You can try one of the dwarf fruitless olive trees, a dwarf purple leaf plum (remains evergreen) or a dwarf citrus tree in the spot. All are small trees and all are evergreen which will give you a little privacy. Or, you can plant a large shrub which has been trained into a tree shape such as a camellia or an oleander. Best wishes with your landscape!
