I planted a river birch 2 years ago and it has never really seemed to take. It seems to drop leaves constantly. It's just planted in the ground, surrounded by grass. Does it need to be planted in a bed and mulched in, so as to retain moisture? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

River birches are relatively easy to grow and tolerate a fairly wide range of growing conditions and soil types and are relatively pest and disease free, but that is not to say they never have any problems. I can't really identify why yours is not thriving. Deep watering once a week should keep it happy. You might want to contact your county extension for a precise identification of the problem and suggestions as to how to remedy the situation. Sorry I can't be of more help!
