Last year I planted bulbs and some other garden favorites only to find them eaten or gnawed on by squirrels. Someone suggested using blood meal to keep them at bay but this only worked for a short period. Any better suggestions?

There are several things you can try. There are commercially formulated repellent sprays as well as home made ones based on garlic and/or red pepper. You can also make a wire mesh cage around the bulbs or lay chicken wire over the bed after you have planted your bulbs. Sometimes, if it is animals other than squirrels, spreading thorny branches among them will help. Some people also report success allowing a pet dog or cat to patrol the area. Hope this helps!
