The best defense against pests in the garden is to grow healthy vigorous plants, that can sustain occasional attacks from insects. Usually there's a balance of beneficial and destructive insects in a garden. The bad guys show up first, and when their populations grow large enough, the good guys come in and clean house. If you have a variety of plants blooming all spring and summer, you'll attract the beneficial insects, who will stay and prey on the destructive critters. For immediate control, you can handpick any insects you see, or you can spray them off your plants with a strong stream of water from the hose.
