The Q&A Archives: planting under a tree and in shallow ground

Question: I have a maple tree in my yard. We have laid down landscape fabric and put about 4 inches of dirt on top. I want to plant perennials that will bloom from spring into the fall. What would work best with the shallowness of the dirt? Hopefully we in doing this, we haven't done anything to hurt the tree?
