how do you get rid of mushrooms in the lawn grass?

Mushrooms are growing because of something underground - a decomposing root or construction debris or something of that nature. You can dig the decomposing matter out of the ground or you can simply rake out the mushrooms as they appear each spring. Wish I had other suggestions!
