Begonia, Impatiens, Caladium, Coleus, Ferns, Hosta, Coral Bells, Columbine, and Foam Flower are all good choices for a shady spot. You might also try Asarium (ginger), Baptisia australis (Blue wild indigo), or Lily of the Valley. Some shrubs for in front of your house include Skimmia, dwarf English laurel "Otto Luken", or winter Daphne. All grow well in the shade and all are relatively maintenance free. Best wishes with your shade plants.
