what best can I plant in our short season, alkaline soil |
There are hundreds of short season veggies you can plant and still harvest before the weather turns cold. What's nice about gardening in Bend is that the summers are really warm, which makes tomatoes and squash grow like crazy from June through August. Look on the backs of the seed packets for days to maturity and choose those varieties that are identified as short season veggies. You can improve your soil with the addition of organic matter. I use compost or aged manure, spread 3-4 inches over the garden bed and dig it in to a depth of 8-10 inches. Organic matter will loosen the soil and add nutrients as it decomposes. Best wishes with your garden! |
