Also when you don't have a sprinkler system and your area is in a drought with water restrictions do you have any suggestions how to keep your yard from turning into a waste land of sand.thanks Danielle |
| I know it can be confusing when trying to decide how to control weeds with chemicals. This is because there are different types of weeds and not all will respond to the same herbicides. And, not all herbicides are safe to use on all kinds of turfgrasses or near other plants. The bottom line is that there is no one product that will kill off all weeds and still be safe for your lawn or flower beds. The best approach is to pull or dig the weeds out. The next best thing is to identify the weeds or have them identified for you and then choose the most effective, least toxic solution to the weed problem. I always opt for hand pulling the weeds, starting in just one small area of the garden and working my way all around the garden. After you have gotten rid of the weeds you can either lay landscape fabric (weed blocker) or several inches of mulch over the bare soil to keep new weeds from cropping up. Water restrictions can make gardening a real challenge. To address this issue you can enrich your soil by incorporating lots of organic matter such as compost. The organic matter will hold moisture for longer periods of time, which will help you conserve water. This way you can water deeply once or twice a week and still keep your plants happy.
