The Q&A Archives: How do I plant dahlias?

Question: I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and picked up a couple of dahlias. I would like to plant them on a terrace. What do I do? Are they better in pots?

Answer: Border dahlias (the smaller growing dahlias) will be perfectly happy in containers. Just plant them in regular nursery containers and place them in the sunshine. The standard sized dahlias, those that can grow up to 5 or 6 feet, need to be planted in the ground with a support stake to tie them to so they can remain upright in the summer winds. Best wishes with your dahlias!
