| Hibiscus is a woody shrub that can grow to 20' so keeping it from getting woody is almost impossible. While you might be able to cut it down to ground level each year to promote green rather than woody stems, eventually the plant will die. However, you can keep hibiscus small by pruning throughout the growing season, removing 6-8 inches of growth each time, but you will sacrifice some of the flowers. You can feed your hibiscus in the spring with a 10-10-10 fertilizer but feeding will encourage lots of new growth, which you will need to prune off. I would recommend planting your hibiscus where it has room to grow to its full potential and shear it back once or twice a year to keep it looking neat and full. |
