The Q&A Archives: asparagus

Question: This is my third year for my asparagus, how many can I pick and how many do I have to let go to seed. Thank You

Answer: The rule of thumb is to harvest all emerging asparagus spears for 4 weeks beginning 2 years after planting. Then stop and allow the rest of the spears to develop into ferns. Harvest can be 6-8 weeks in the following years. After harvest, fertilize and water the plants to encourage good fern growth and control pests. When fern die in the fall, mow and mulch them on the beds.
