Bougainvilleas grow nicely up arbors and trellises although they need to be tied until the stems develop bark and will hold themselves upright. Bougainvillea?s that are frozen back should be pruned in early March. Plants not damaged by frost should be pruned after the spring blooming period. You can also remove suckers and long branches during the growing season to shape the plant and reduce its volume.
