I have an excess of weeds that are small clusters of green heart-shape leaves with a purple flower in the center. What is this weed and how can I get rid of it?

Sounds like wild violets and these weeds are really difficult to control because they grow from bulbs. If you cut off the tops or treat them with herbicide, the tops will die but the bulbs will have enough stored energy to resprout. So the best way to eliminate them is to dig them out, bulbous roots and all. Wish there were a less labor intensive way to get rid of those pesky weeds!
