squirrels stripped my bushes of all berries last summer. How can I protect them. They bit through bird netting.

Oh my gosh! Bit through the bird netting?? Actually, I have had rabbits do the same thing so I know how you feel. I think the next best thing is to make cylinders out of chicken wire to completely enclose the plants. Be sure to bury the wire 6 inches into the ground and make the cylinder tall enough that you can use string or fishing wire to tie it together at the top. The cyliners will keep the pesky squirrels out!
