The Q&A Archives: How to care for Azaleas

Question: I am located in Southern California - should I plant new Azaleas in a pot or in the ground? What type of potting soil or mulch should I use?

Answer: Azaleas can be grown in the garden in your region. They like acidic soils so amend the entire planting bed with compost or peat moss and plant your azalea, then mulch over the soil with additional peat moss. Feed with an acidified fertilizer such as one formulated specifically for Rhododendrons and Azaleas or with Miracid. Enjoy your new azalea!
