The Q&A Archives: Identifying

Question: Several spots in my flower beds have been home to a particularly evil weed for the last few years. It has about 3" long, elongated heart shaped leaves, rose like thorns and a vine

Answer: I looked through several weed identification guides, and couldn't find any weed that had all the characteristics you mention. Velvet leaf has large, heart-shaped leaves, but is not a vine; kudzu is a vine but has no thorns; horsenettle has thorns but is not a vine; morning glory/bindweed is a vine but has no thorns. Perhaps you can contact your local Cooperative Extension agent; he/she will be more familiar with weeds specific to your region. The telephone number is 804-890-3730.
