Tthe area in the back of our home is a challenge; part shade, under old trees, on quite a hill. We've had good luck so far with cistus (crimson spot), ceanothus, spirea, and buddleia. I prefer evergreen with lots of color in the spring and summer. Cold tolerant and low water needs a must. I have been reading up on some of the hardy fuschias. Any good ideas to check into?

Hardy Fuchsias would work in that area, as would Weigela, Heather, Escallonia, and Euyonomus. They don't flower in the spring, but have you considered Ornamental Grasses like Japanese Flag, Bloodgrass or Ribbon Grass?
