The Q&A Archives: Weeds

Question: I have this weed growing in my lawn. It has a long stem and a purple flower on it and the leaves are long and thin. What can I use to get rid of this type of weed.

Answer: It could be Ruella or it could be Joe Pye weed. Without positive identification I can't recommend a control strategy other than to hand pull the weed, roots and all. Then take one to your cooperative extension office or well staffed nursery for identification and control options. Best wishes with your lawn!
