I'm relocating to Cape Coral, a block from salt water canals and nature preserve, in late June. There's a sprinkler system and spotty Bahia (?) grass in, nothing else. Where do I start? I'm from RI, love perennials & bulbs, but haven't a clue for FL. area. Ideas?

There are a lot of gardening resources at your fingertips through the University of Florida cooperative extension. Just to get you started, here are a few publications you can download:
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG035
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/EP033
You'll get lots of background information about what grows in Florida as well as when to plant.

Best wishes with your new landscape!
