After most of the flowers are spent on your mounding dianthus and lobelia you can simply use scissors or garden shears to cut the plants down by a third to a half. They will develop new flowering stems and foliage and grow right back into a mounded shape. As the flowers on your lily fade, snap them off with your fingers or cut them off with clippers. New flowers will emerge as the stalk grows taller. When the last flower is spent, cut the flower off but leave the stalk alone. It will die with the first frost and then you can cut it down at ground level. Good luck with your garden!
