I purchase a house and the back yard is gravel and dirt. I don't know what to do or how to start improving my back. One day I want an outdoor living yard to enjoy all year around.

Removing all the gravel will be quite a job - you'll need to rake it up and find another place for it. I'd start small (sketch your dream backyard out on paper) and work around the yard one bit at a time. You may want flower or vegetable beds, a few trees for shade or maybe a patio and BBQ. Work one small area at a time, raking out the gravel, amending the soil with organic matter and planting. It may take a while but I think you'll end up with the yard of your dreams. Don't forget to check some books out at the library. There are lots of them devoted to Southwest Gardening and all will include plants adapted to growing in the Valley of the Sun. Enjoy your project!
