After 30 years of gardening, I purchased my first flat of salvias. What should I do? (Besides giving them Miracle Gro). Do they need to be pinched back. Should I be deadheading them through the summer?

Salvias are one of the most carefree plants you can grow. They're a member of the sage family, so like full sunshine and dryish soil conditions. There are at least 60 species of salvia; some are annual, some are perennial. The flowers of some salvias are used in flower arrangements, so you can cut the flowers if you'd like. Deadheading isn't required, but will help the plants look their best, and will encourage additional blooms when you remove the spent flowers before they form seeds.
